Samsung company looking for labor violations at Chinese suppliers

Samsung had been stepping up oversight of its China-based suppliers.

July 03, 2014, 6:33 AM,  Dozens of China-based suppliers to Samsung Electronics violated various labor regulations last year, including failing to pay overtime wages and provide proper safety equipment for workers, according to recent audits.
In a report Monday, the Korean electronics maker revealed some of its progress in keeping company suppliers in line with labor codes. Back in November 2012, Samsung announced it would address ongoing labor violations at the China-based manufacturers after a labor watchdog group accused one of the suppliers of using child workers.
Samsung's latest sustainability report said no suppliers had been found hiring children, but audits conducted last year showed that labor-related problems still remain.
A third-party audit of 100 China-based suppliers found that 59 of them had failed to provide or ensure that workers were using proper safety gear, according to the report. In addition, 39 suppliers excluded the overtime pay when giving out wages to part-time workers.

July 03, 2014, 06:30 AM — The just-announced Samsung Galaxy S5 mini looks to be a great phone for those who want a smaller screen and smaller price tag than the full-blown Samsung Galaxy S5. How does it stack up against the other great mini, the HTC One mini 2?




  Screen: Both devices have the same sized screen, at 4.5 inches. And they've also got the same resolution at 1280 by 720 pixel. They use different screen technology, with the Samsung device using Super AMOLED, and the HTC using Super LCD2. So this one's a tie.
 
  Processor: On paper the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini wins, by dint of its quad-core 1.4 Ghz processor, versus the 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor. But lets face it -- that .2 Ghz difference will mean nothing in real life. So once again, I'll have to call this one a tie.
