Using Apps to Find Your IPhone/IPad, Your Car and Other Device

Have you ever misplaced or lost your IPhone or IPad?   Have you ever misplaced your car in a large parking lot?   Have you ever misplaced your glasses, keys or wallet?    Chances are you have experienced at least one or all of these things.   Well there are free IPhone/IPad apps that allow you to find your IPad/IPhone, or your car or any property. Find My IPhone - If you have an IPhone or an IPad, this is a necessity.  This is a free Apple App that uses

Apple ICloud to allow users to find a missing IPhone or IPad.   This works for Apple MacBooks as well. To install Find My IPhone on your IPhone or IPad follow these steps.
1.  Go into the Apple App Store on your IPhone/IPad and search for “Find My IPhone”.  Install the app.  If you have more than one IPhone/IPad, make sure to install it on each device.
2.  Once installed, go to “Settings”, then “ICloud”.   Make sure On is selected for the
“Find My IPad or Find My IPhone” setting.  Again, as in Step #1, you will need to do this for each of your IPhone or IPad devices you own.
3.  Then go to the “Find IPhone” app on your IPad or IPhone.
4.  Login with your Apple ID and password.
5.  This will then give you a screen detailing your devices.  If your devices are connected to an Internet connection and online, you will get a green radio button next to the device.
6.  You can then select the device and it will then give you the current location of the device.
 7.  If you press on the arrow button, it will give you an option to play a noise on the device, erase the device (in case it was stolen), or if you have Apple IOS 6 on it, you can use “Lost Mode”, which locks the device down with a four digit passcode and can display a contact phone number on the screen of the device.  It will even give you driving directions to the device.
8.  You can also login to search for your IPhone/IPad on any computer web browser by going to http://www.icloud.com.  Then login with your Apple Username and password.  Then select “Find my IPhone” and if your devices are online, it will locate them for you as well.

Find My Car - This app, which is also available for Android phones, allows a user to record where they parked their car using Google Maps, take a picture of the car and then allow the user later on to find the car (there is a paid version that gives you more features).
To install Find My Car, follow these steps.
1.  Go into the Apple App Store on your IPhone/IPad and search for “Find My Car”.  Install the app.
 2.  Once installed, select the App and press Set My Car Location.

3.  It will automatically find the current location of your car.  Then you can take a photo of your car by pressing Add a Photo.  You can also add a note as well, such as a unique landmark that will come in handy to find the car.
4.  Press Save when done.
5.  Then later when you need to find the car, go back into the app, then select “Find My Car”. My StuffFinder - This is an Apple app that requires IOS 6.  It works similar to “Find My car” but has many other categories and some other neat features (there is a paid version that gives you more features).
1.  Go into the Apple App Store on your IPhone/IPad and search for “My StuffFinder”.  Install the app.
2.  Once installed, select the App and select “Save Item”.   It will give you a screen similar to below.  Select the item category you want to save.  You can even add a custom item not listed.
3.  After you have selected the item, you will get the current location.  You can then also take a picture and record a voice message.  Once done, press Save.

4.  To find your item, simply open the Stuff Finder App and select Find Item.  Then choose the item you are searching for from the menu (you can save multiple items with “My StuffFinder”) The “Find My Car” and “My StuffFinder” apps were recently highlighted in a New York Times “GadgetWise” article which can be found below.
